BC's electoral map changed in 2009. The independent BC Electoral Boundaries Commission redrew the boundaries for many parts of BC, including the eastern Fraser Valley.
To address population changes and concerns about representation in rural parts of British Columbia, a total of 6 new seats were added to the BC Legislature –- which means six more electoral areas (ridings), including one more in the Fraser Valley to address population growth.
As a life-long resident of the Fraser Valley, I have been honoured to represent Chilliwack-Kent in the BC Legislature. This is where my home is located and where I grew up and went to school.
As a result of the new boundary changes, Chilliwack-Kent was renamed Chilliwack-Hope and is almost 10 times bigger in size, but has slightly fewer constituents.
With a population of more than 40,000 residents, Chilliwack-Hope reaches from lower Sardis and Columbia Valley, through Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs, to the western fringe of Manning Park. Hope and its neighbouring communities, like Yale, Boston Bar, North Bend and Sunshine Valley, have been part of the Yale-Lillooet riding. However, as a result of the changes they are now part of the renamed and expanded Chilliwack-Hope riding.
