Hope Benefits from $7 Million for Crucial Infrastructure Projects

2009-11-20

Canada and B.C. have announced a joint total investment of $7,172,150 for the District of Hope and surrounding area. It is estimated that 45 new direct and indirect jobs will be created as a result of this investment through the Building Canada Fund and Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

"As recent weather events have demonstrated, we need to keep up our guard against flooding and erosion from fast flowing rivers," said Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner. "It's important to protect and maintain our transportation infrastructure in the eastern Fraser Valley."

"It is a priority for all three levels of government to meet the needs of our communities and deliver on these needs in the quickest way possible," says Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl. "This partnership not only provides the residents in the eastern valley with new and safer roadways and bridges it also creates jobs during these uncertain economic times."

Hope will benefit from infrastructure projects including:

  • $152,150 for a project involving adding riprap rock to two locations on the left bank of Silverhope Creek. The rock will be installed along a 10 metre section of the dike upstream of the Flood-Hope Road Bridge and along a 30 metre section downstream. This work will prevent erosion and protect the bridge.
  • $3,420,000 in Capital Project funding for the Trans Canada Highway is to be resurfaced north of Yale. "Hot-in-Place" (HIPR) recycling resurfacing will be used for approximately 80 lane-kilometres of highway 1. Most of the resurfacing will be between Sailor Bar Tunnel and Anderson Bridge (South of Boston Bar). This surface improvement will provide area residents, tourists, the forest industry and commercial transport vehicles with a safer and smoother ride. Hot-in-Place recycling is a paving rehabilitation technique that provides environmental benefits. By reusing materials, this project reduces the quantity of fossil fuels and emissions that would otherwise have been generated for extraction and processing of new materials. With a reduced need to haul materials long distances to the work site, hot-in-place recycling saves transport fuel use and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • $3,600,000 in Capital Project funds for the resurfacing of 32 kilometres of highway, from Laidlaw to Flood Road. This resurfacing will extend the life of the roadway by 15 years, thereby avoiding full roadway reconstruction at four times the cost of the resurfacing.

Since February the province has announced about 480 projects, worth $3.4 billion, which will create an estimated 21,600 jobs in communities across B.C.

The project is funded under the Province’s three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C.
